“ To make a point no one should have to make: earlier this year, a deranged Army sergeant named John Russell opened fire near a combat stress clinic — sound familiar? — at Baghdad’s Camp Liberty and killed five of his fellow soldiers. No one speculated about any religious motivations. No one suggested he was part of an enemy “infiltration,” or suggested that U.S. troops have been “brainwashed.” Everyone understood that Russell was a deranged lunatic, not an advance scout for a conspiracy to subvert the military internally. It’s funny how double standards work. Actually, no. It’s disgusting.

“ Religion is far more of a choice than homosexuality. And the protections that we have for religion — we protect religion. And talk about a lifestyle choice — that is absolutely a choice… It’s a travesty that people have forced someone who is gay to have to make their case that they deserve the same basic rights as someone else…

The Vicarious Experience Project

rodeodog:

Ever had someone visit your city, town or hamlet and realize it had been forever since you went to the zoo, museum or orchard? Often (if not always) our choices of destinations are influenced by the network of people around us, leading us to new places as well as shaping our memory and experience of that place. With this in mind, I have an art project and tourist experiment that I need your help with.

What I need from you:
Assignments. Tell me a place in Paris you’d like me to go. Historical site, garden, restaurant, market, whatever. Creative assignments are a-ok. Simply assign me a destination, and tell me why you chose it.
(The fine print: I will try to do all the assignments! Those that are free or cheap will naturally be moved to the top of the pile. The reasoning behind your choice will be very interesting and helpful to me, but please don’t feel you have to write an essay.)

What’s in it for you:
You will certainly get a postcard from the assigned place. These experiences will be cataloged and expanded upon in artworks, so you’ll be immortalized as a muse if you’re into that kind of thing. Also, the warm and fuzzy feeling of helping out a struggling artist, vicariously visiting Paris, and my undying thanks…

The art theory part:
My artwork has been largely themed on collections, desire and accumulation; in the recent past this has centered on objects, and now I’m considering how experiences play into the idea of collecting. How and why do we collect and manifest our experiences? Do we do it for ourselves, or for other people? An experience is a nebulous and malleable concept, influenced by many variables. I plan to investigate in an autobiographical manner how these adventures are shaped by my network of people.

I look forward to your ideas and motivation. I plan to post updates about the project  here and on a Facebook group, where you’re welcome to post assignments. If you post an assignment here in the comments, be sure to tell me who you are! Of course, you can e-mail me as well…thanks for collaborating with me!

last time i was in paris i spent an entire day outside of the foundation cartier. i went there to study the jean nouvel building. i was mostly interested in how the building changes throughout the course of a day and the way that it had changed since it was designed and i had first visited it (quite alot actually). the east side of the building still holds pretty true to the original memory of the building- the west- not so much. this building also contains a collection i believe, at the very least there are a couple of exhibition floors- via their website right now is a graffiti show. so why did i pick this place- my memory of this place has changed quite alot over the last 12 years but you would be going into this with only what i chose to share about my memories and have as the starting point what this place is now.  . it sounded like an interesting idea given your text above.

the foundation cartier is on the east side of the boulevard raspail in the 14th arrondissement. either walk north from denfert-rochereau or walk south from raspail.

Here's what burns my biscuit:

annicka:anniehinton: daveholmes:

You can’t make a commercial that says “Cheerios is 10% more nutritious than Corn Chex” unless you can back that claim up. You can’t say “More people chose Late Night Doritos in a blind taste test” unless you’ve actually run that blind taste test and more people really chose Late Night Doritos. But you can make a commercial that says “Married gay people will definitely come to your children’s schools and teach them how to have gay sex,” and that commercial can just air as is. Even when the people who made the commercial admit that they pulled that claim out of thin air, and that it is not meant to be taken literally. You can just put that commercial up on TV and scare a tiny sliver of the population out of their homes and into the ballot box, and people’s rights can be taken away.

Outbreak of mumps in Brooklyn

jayparkinsonmd:

ALERT # 41: Outbreak of Mumps in Brooklyn

1) 57 confirmed or probable cases of mumps have been identified in Brooklyn since August 21, 2009.

The NYC Department of Health (and the antiquated “mental hygiene”) communicates very efficiently with all the NYC physicians. When there is something weird happening with the city’s public health, we all know about it via an email blast. It’s surely the best Department of Health in the country.

Here’s today’s evidence that the bogus anti-vaccine movement is harming our children. This is almost completely preventable.
